In the city
A couple of weekends ago, rather than hitting the shows at LFW, I opted to go on a trip to Helsinki to discover the city. I can’t get enough of seeing new places, and thought Somerset House wouldn’t miss me too much for a season.
Helsinki, and Finland in general, was a place I really didn’t know anything about (aside from the fact that the band HIM hailed from there…which was probably more useful in about 2004). I had no preconceptions, and no idea what I’d find when I got off the plane. I’d been to Stockholm, and assumed I’d be dealing with something similar. But I very quickly learnt that Finland has a very distinct culture all of it’s own.

As we wandered the design district, I couldn’t help but spot names that were very familiar to me, but that I had no idea were Finnish – wonderful shoe designer Minna Parikka being one. I could have kicked myself! Perhaps the Finns are too humble. I felt even more ridiculous when I realised that my childhood favourites, The Moomins, were also created in Finland – I then spent the rest of the trip hunting down all the Moomin memorabilia I could, which isn’t difficult as they are very proud of Tove Jansson and her creations.
Helsinki is a very clean city, and small enough that you can walk almost anywhere by foot, which makes exploring even better. I’ve collected together addresses and tips amongst the pictures below if you’re planning your own trip. Due to a packed schedule at the MTV Push Festival I didn’t get to see all of the places you recommended in my last post, but I’m certain this won’t be my only visit!
My next post will feature a different side to the city, and my favourite part of the entire trip! x
